FP2: Lorenzo sets the pace, Iannone 2nd

Le Mans seems to be designed especially for him. An uncontrollable Jorge Lorenzo dominated the second practice session, powering his Yamaha to the head of the pack. The Spaniard lapped almost a second quicker than Pedrosa did this morning, setting a best of 1’32”830. The current champion, who won here last year, made his intentions very clear during the afternoon's session.

Chasing behind him was Andrea Iannone (+0.339), demonstrating the growth of the Ducati. With the new tyre, the Italian led the charge by the chasing group, despite a gap of over three tenths. Behind him, the Honda of Marc Marquez (+0.483), almost half a second from the front. While #93 confirmed the position he held in FP1, the real surprise was Pol Espargarò (+0.576).The Tech3 satellite Yamaha rider scored fourth place, preceding Andrea Dovizioso (+0.744) and brother Aleix (+0.765).

Behind them was Maverick Vinales (+0.783). The Spanish Suzuki rider was on course to set the fastest lap through sector one, but lost precious tenths through the second and third sections. Only eighth for Daniel Pedrosa (+0.918), after having set the best time this morning, now ninth tenths from Lorenzo.

Things went no better for Rossi (+1.144), tenth. While Lorenzo looks down from above, #46 has to deal with a gap of more than one second. His Yamaha appears cantankerous, suffering particularly in the changes of direction. Danilo Petrucci is to be admired for setting the eleventh best time. Returning after injuring his right hand, the Pramac rider is only 0.076 of a second behind the Doctor.

Cal Crutchlow, having suffered a crash at the start of the session, closed twelfth, followed by Redding, Smith and Baz, 13th, 14th and 15th. Rabat and Bautista on the Aprilia round out the pack.
