Maverick Viñales receives compliments from the entire paddock after his first win. Even Valentino is no exception: “More than happy, I’m worried about next year! - he laughs - In truth, from the time he signed with Yamaha, I knew that he would be a tough rival. It is nothing new. Anyone in the paddock knows his talent.”
Maverick smiles and enjoys his moment. In fact, he tries to give it form, to assimilate with it.
“Until the last lap I didn’t realize that I had won - he laughs - The truth is that I pushed the entire race and I stayed focused 100% so I would not make any mistakes and so I would ride as best as possible.”
Now the mission is accomplished and he can celebrate.
“This is definitely the greatest moment of my career. I have never been so happy - he continues - I must thank the team for all the work they have done, Suzuki, everyone who has been close to me and who had faith in me and then my trainer and Kiara (editor’s note: Fontanesi, motocross champion and his fiancé). It is a dream come true.”
However, it was nothing easy, because Viñales grew along with the GSX-RR, a path that has arrived at its first important benchmark.
“And now I want even more, to continue on this path - he already looks to the future - This weekend we worked really well. If I did what I did, I also owe it to the team. I focused on the hard tyre and on the second part of the race, where I usually struggled. At Silverstone, I have always felt comfortable and today was no exception. It was not difficult to maintain a good pace.”
Easy to say, but doing it is often a completely different story. Not for Maverick, Top Gun in name and deed.
