MotoGP, Taramasso: Australia a test bench for the Michelins

“At Phillip Island the rear tyre offers the same performance at 15 and 40 degrees, this time we'll be better set up”

MotoGP: Taramasso: Australia a test bench for the Michelins

Phillip Island is definitely a unique track with one obvious obstacle to overcome, the heat. From 15 degrees in the morning, the temperature later reached 40 degrees. But the tyres seem to hold up. This test, according to Piero Taramasso, could already reveal the specifications for the new season.

There's no weather issue like there was here in October?

Of course conditions are similar to October, but the tyres remain more or less the same. The rear is identical, or rather medium and har with the same specification. At the front we have two tyres with the same compound, but a new carcass, which has a larger profile, so as to offer the riders greater confidence. We already used it at Sepang and feedback was positive”.

What changes with respect to Sepang.

“This layout is very asymmetric, in fact it particularly stressed the left part. The temperature goes up and controlling it is the most complicated part, because we risk exceeding the limit. In Malaysia there is strong braking, so it stimulate the front. Also, the asphalt is more abrasive, unlike the Australian track which is smoother”.

What's changed since one year ago?

“The front offers much more grip than it did in the past. The last tests proved positive. If the riders confirm the Malaysian trend, we may well already have the specifications for the 2017 tyres. In this season year, the aim is to be better adjusted. In 2016, each week we had to go over different aspects, but not any more”.

The temperature's gone above 40 degrees, but the tyres hold up.

At the rear the tyre works well at 15 and 40 degrees, this is definitely encouraging. This morning there were crashes at turn 6, but this was down to the wind”.
