The news that has been circulating for days has finally been made official. Formula 1 must have really enjoyed its stay in Italy during the 2020 season, given that in 2021 it will return to our country not only for the classic GP at Monza but also for the one at Imola on April 18th. After an absence of 14 years, therefore, the Circus will return to the Enzo & Dino Ferrari circuit for the second consecutive year. In the last edition the winner was Lewis Hamilton ahead of his teammate Valterri Bottas, both with Mercedes, third place went to Daniel Ricciardo in a Renault.
The confirmation of Imola in the very busy Formula 1 calendar, as the second round of the year after the Bahrain GP, highlights even more the absence of the two-wheeled world championships in Imola for 2021. While MotoGP has been absent since 1999, SBK ran its last race there in 2019 and, after the cancellation of the 2020 round, it has not returned to the calendar for the new season. On the other hand, CIV will race at Imola on 3-4 July.
“It has been a busy start to the year at Formula 1 and we are pleased to confirm that the number of races planned for the season remains unchanged,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1. “The global pandemic has not yet allowed life to return to normal, but we showed in 2020 that we can race safely as the first international sport to return and we have the experience and plans in place to deliver on our season. We are very excited to announce that Imola will return for the 2021 season and know our fans will be looking forward to the return of Formula 1 after the winter break and our revised season opener in Bahrain. Obviously, the virus situation remains fluid, but we have the experience from last season with all our partners and promoters to adapt accordingly and safely in 2021.”
