Moto3, Simoncelli: “The race in Termas vanished like leaves after a gust of wind”

“Riccardo Rossi is like an on-and-off switch. It’s a shame we can’t help him be more concrete. Arbolino grew up with me. He reminded me of why I  used to call him a ‘motorcycle artist’.”

Moto3: Simoncelli: “The race in Termas vanished like leaves after a gust of wind”

An impersonal statement isn’t enough for Paolo Simoncelli. He, in fact, keeps a diary where he writes everything that happens during each Grand Prix weekend. Results, impressions, emotions, a way for fans to experience the Sic58 Squadra Corse’s weekend, and more.

The following is what Paolo wrote after the Argentine GP.

I saw this race vanish like leaves after a gust of autumn wind.  I’m disappointed. Disappointed and sorry, after an amazing comeback, from the 19th position to the fight for the podium. Rossi then thwarted everything with a senseless maneuver at the last lap. Actually, with an entire last senseless lap made up of “non braking” braking.

Riki is like an ‘on-off’ switch. On or off, in all the races where he was doing great – Jerez, Sepang, Thailand, where he got on the podium, but he could’ve won – he wasn’t able to reach the desired results. When the bike and the rider are good,  the problem is even more serious, because  you don’t know how to deal with it. It’s a pity not to be able to help him be more concrete, but how do we teach him to make the most sensible choice at the right time?

By now, he should have learned a bit of experience and tactical sense. On the one hand, I think he was good at making such a comeback. On the other,  he basically shouldn’t start 19th on the grid (due to an “off” moment on Saturday). Races that end like this piss you off for days and leave you with a sense of helplessness that, at least for me, is difficult to describe.

Toba had a good race. He qualified in a decent 7th position. It’s true that many fell up front, but it’s also true that he remained in the game. We’re starting to get to know him. He understands that the team appreciates him, that he doesn’t have to prove anything to us, but he just has to think about racing well.

During the first lap, the rookies made themselves noticed with their extreme overtaking and aggressive maneuvers. Someone should explain to them that thoae are useless. They only make you  lose precious meters from the leading group that, in the meantime, happily continues its race. It’s true that ,if my riders were to start from up front, this problem wouldn’t exist. We can stay here and say it, and reiterate it but, in the end, thi is all part of the show.

Arbolino was a kid who became a  young man with me, and seeing the perfection of races like the one he did on Sunday, makes me relive the 2014 Mugello race. Starting last, due to a penalty that I can’t remember now, he won the victory in the sprint before enraptured spectators and me and an ecstatic Fabio Balducci. Yesterday, he reminded me of why I used to call him ‘motorcycle artist’. Bravo Tony! (And, to be honest, Suzuki also grew up great with us too…)

And, now, a few days in beautiful Patagonia, then we’ll talk about Austin!
