MotoGP: Alex Rins: “I’ve never been this fast here at Mugello with the Suzuki”

Among the surprises of the first day of free practice on the Mugello circuit, there’s definitely Alex Rins’ third time in the FP2. With 1’45”5, the Spanish rider brought his Honda to the top, at a moment when the Japanese constructor is clearly having problems. The nearest Honda is Marc Marquez’s, in eighth. To enter the Q2, he took advantage of Viñales’ slipstream, knocking him down from the top 10.

I’m satisfied to have done my best with the package I have available,” Alex explained. “I think I still have room for improvement. I managed to follow my trajectories today, and the pace is good. I hadn’t done 1’45” here with Suzuki yet, It was a really good lap.

What were your feelings on the bike here at Mugello?
The truth is that, at the beginning of the FP1, the sensations weren’t great. I had difficulty in braking. But, then, working on the set-up, entering corners improved and, despite the worn out tires, I was riding on a low 1’47”. I still made some mistakes on the fast lap, so I know I can improve again.”

What expectations do you have for tomorrow?
Much will depend on the weather, which seems very uncertain. It’s clear, however, that Ducati is superior here at Mugello, so we’ll have to bite the bullet.”

Where on the track could you be able to compete with the Ducati?
In the fast points, maybe we have a chance to make a difference. The two Arrabiata, the chicane,” Alex concluded.
