SBK: Simone Corsi’s clamorous transition to Ducati

Of all the news concerning the Italian riders market from a 2024 perspective, this is undoubtedly the most resounding to date. CIV Supersport Champion 2023, no later than October 7th, Simone Corsi leaves the AltoGo Yamaha team for Renzi Corse Ducati, wearing the colors of the Borgo Panigale constructor for the first time.

In fact, the agreement was only reached in recent days. On the eve of the wild card in the final round of the Supersport World Championship in Jerez de la Frontera, Simone Corsi seemed close to renewing with the AltoGo team for a project on paper destined to extend into the championship series after a "purgatory-like" (but winning) season in the Supersport CIV. But the Renzi Corsi team made a counter-proposal, which convinced the rider from Rome.

Corsi’s excitement

The former MotoGP champion will ride the Panigale V2 955 that his competitor, Matteo Patacca, has been riding for the past two years in the CIV Supersport: “I’ve known team manager Stefano Renzi for a long time. We were opponents this year, but next season we’ll be on the same side,” Corsi said. “From the outside, the team looks very professional. I’m happy to be able to represent it. It’ll be a new adventure for me. For the first time in my career, I’ll be riding a Ducati. I’m excited. Ducati is doing an excellent job, winning practically all the major championships in which it participates, so the bike will definitely live up to expectations.”

Program to be defined

Both parties expressed interest in setting up an ambitious program, which is still being defined. Right now, they’re not sure in which championship they'll be in 2024: CIV Supersport remains in the background, with Corsi called upon to defend the #1, at this point. But we’re also waiting for answers with regard to the Supersport championship.
