MotoGP, Lorenzo: “Dall’Igna is happy for Marquez, but not everyone is happy in Ducati”

VMoto looks to the future and sports the APD at EICMA. We’re talking about a concept that was developed in collaboration with an exceptional partner: the Pininfarina Style Center. This is a new maxi-scooter that Vmoto will be introducing in the future. Jorge Lorenzo unveiled it at the Salone di Rho Fiera Milano. Along with the rider from Majorca, we tackled the issue of electric sustainability, as well as the current World Championship season, in which Bagnaia and Martin are racing for the title, three races from the end.

“This bike is a concept that looks to the future,” Lorenzo began. “In some ways, it seems like we’re already in 2040. I think that, in recent years, the electric sector has achieved incredible performance in respect of the environment, trying to protect it.”

Lorenzo spent a day in Milan because, in a few hours, he’ll be in Malaysia commenting on the GP with our colleagues of DAZN in Spain.
“I’ll be flying to Barcelona shortly, since I'’ll be commenting on the MotoGP this weekend. It’s a very exciting season with great challenges on the track thanks, among other things, to the introduction of the sprint race.”

Jorge, what did you think about the Bagnaia-Martin challenge?
“If Pecco hadn’t fallen in Barcelona, he would most likely already be world champion, or almost. Instead, the fall took points away, conditioning him from a physical point of view. Montmelò was a crucial race for Bagnaia, while Martin gained more confidence in the second part of the season, raising the bar.”

What will make a difference in this final Sprint?
The strengths are very similar. Pecco is regaining confidence after Barcelona, while Martin is stronger than ever. Everything is going in the right direction for Jorge, but things can change radically at any moment. Surely, he has taken advantage of the moment to win in Malaysia and Qatar, then try to get to it in Valencia.”

What do you see of yourself in Martin and Bagnaia?
“Bagnaia is detached and has my perfectionist nature, while Martin is explosive. Along with them, there’s Quartararo, who rides the Yamaha with a style similar to mine.”

Would you have ever imagined seeing the reference Ducati in the MotoGP?
“I knew Gigi could do it. He’s stubborn and, technologically, he’s a step ahead of everyone. In fact, he’s always created the best bike among the 125, Superbike, and MotoGP. It is precisely for that reason that I decided to leave Yamaha for Ducati, because I knew it would become the best bike. They would probably have made it without me but, with me, Dall’Igna accelerated that process in creating a bike that was more complete and easier for all riders to ride. When I arrived at Ducati, the bike had great power and advanced aerodynamics, but I had made him understand that rideability was also needed. Today, the Desmosedici goes a great distance, and all the riders are fast.”

Marquez will be there next year. What’s going to change?
“Marc’s arrival is good news for Ducati, because they’re getting the best rider at zero cost. But it’s also a problem because not all the executives at Ducati wanted Marc. Gigi certainly wanted him, since he’s always aiming for the fastest riders. However, there are two aspects that worry us. The first is losing Marc after only one year, because he’d then take all the knowledge he acquired with him. The second is that  he can beat Martin and Bagnaia.”

Do you think Bagnaia is actually happy about his arrival?
“The only thing Pecco could do was add an anti-Marquez clause. It’s a bit like when Rossi came back to Yamaha, but I hadn’t added any clause to stop Valentino from returning.”

Will Marquez win the first race in Qatar right away?
“I think he’s going to win a lot of races next year. I don’t know if he can fight for the title, but if I had to bet, I’d bet on him.”
