Marc Marquez’s separation after 11 seasons really shook up Honda, which almost entirely revised the internal organization of its team after the eight-time world champion left.
Marc’s decision was very impactful. Even if both parties had reached this agreement a year before his contract expired, Marc’s and HRC’s excellent relationship doesn’t seem to have suffered because the 30-year-old rider decided to join the Gresini team in 2024, after the problems he had with the RC213V, the bike with which he set his record of falls in one single season in 2023.
Although Marc never hid the sadness that surrounded his farewell to Honda, the Spanish champion wanted to explain to his colleagues at Motorsport.com the reasons why it was particularly easy to leave the team with which he won six of his world titles.
“It’s easy for me to explain. I’ve always had a very good and honest relationship with Honda. We had eleven years, in my opinion, of great success, with a win-win relationship. And I believe that this decision for next year is also a victory for everyone,” Marquez said before analyzing the positive aspects of his move to Gresini.
“I’ll be getting on a bike that’s at the top of the championship, and I’ll try to achieve my goal, which is to feel competitive again. This doesn’t mean winning, but only feeling competitive, riding more comfortably, and trying to fight for the top positions in some races,” the rider from Cervera said, convinced that HRC can also benefit greatly from his leaving. “The reality is that all the budget they used to pay me will go to the bike. I had my comfort zone here. I could stay, ride the bike, and make my salary without pressure. But I think the best thing for the project now is that they invest everything in the bike.”
