: FIM's Intercontinental Games? Checco Costa invented them in 1978!

The FIM announced the new Intercontinental Games today: a road event involving all 6 continents, with Yamaha R3s and R7s.

While we wait for the details (that seem decidedly tortuous from the first reports), you might recall that Checco Costa was the inventor of an event on a decidedly different level. He had brought the AGV Nations Cup to Imola.

The great Checco is in the photo, with the captains of the five teams that competed in the finale of the first edition (from left to right): Barry Sheene (Great Britain), Kenny Roberts (United States), Michel Rougerie (France), Walter Villa (Italy), and Johnny Cecotto (Rest of the World).

We're talking about absolute stars and role players, not background actors.

Imola racetrack, October 8th, 1978.
