11:35 a.m. - It's been more than a year since Marc Marquez last took pole in 2023, when he managed to take the top spot on the grid at Portimao, the opening round of last season. Today Marc wrote another page in his sporting history (pole number 93!), taking his first pole since switching to Team Gresini with a Ducati that he now has completely in hand. Marco Bezzecchi took an excellent second place on the grid ahead of Martìn, completing the perfect front row for Ducati.
Brad Binder is the first intruder in the Ducati platoon with his 4th time after also making it through Q1. Behind Brad two other Ducatisti with Di Giannantonio 5th on Alex Marquez, while Pecco Bagnaia is relegated to the third row along with Morbidelli and Bastianini. There are therefore 8 Ducatis in the first 9 positions on the grid. Tenth time for Acosta, who was about to take a resounding pole but then made a mistake losing a great chance, while the two Aprilia Factory bikes of Vinales and Espargarò, who didn't digest these conditions very well, close qualifying in 11th and 12th.
11:32 - Qualifying closes with Marc Marquez's first pole on the Ducati! Front row for Bezzecchi and Martìn, the final Q2 standings.
11:31 - Aprilias do badly in the wet, with Vinales 11th ahead of Aleix Espargarò. Marquez is first to take the checkered flag, Binder slots in 4th. Bagnaia now 7th, third row for Pecco.
11:30 - The standings when there are 2 minutes left
11:28 - Bezzecchi sets a great time and takes the top spot, but then Marc Marquez responds, first rider to go under the 1'47 wall! Third Martìn, then Di Giannanotnio, Binder and Bagnaia.
11:26 - Acosta pushes hard but makes a small mistake and loses 7 tenths of advantage. Addesso it literally rains red helmets! Acosta down at the hairpin
11:25 - Acosta scores a red helmet in the first two sectors!
11:24 - Bagnaia enters the track, who is obviously aiming for the front row but is currently 6th.
11:21 - Di Giannantonio and Marquez do not improve, all the riders are now stopped in the pits probably to switch from a soft rear to a medium, still rain.
11:20 - Martìn climbs to second place, but after a while Binder comes in and places the chop! Brad first over Marquez and Martìn, then Acosta and Di Giannantonio. The standings
11:19 - Red helmets are obviously flowing, so the times will drop further. He's lapping very strong Binder in the early sectors.
11:18 - Soon the first references from the track, all the riders are forming a very long little train. Marquez immediately gets ahead of everyone, followed by Acosta and Di Giannantonio. Then Martìn and Morbidelli.
11:16 - A light sun comes out, grip conditions will change over the course of the session adding a difficult element for the riders to decipher.
11:15 - Green light in Jerez, Q2 gets underway!
11:14 - Martìn is another rider to keep a very close eye on in qualifying, but Jorge in general in the wet has not always been most effective.
11:13 - Marquez seems calm in the Gresini box, today he could take his first pole with Ducati.
11:12 - This is the list of riders who will face off in the hunt for pole. Marquez had been very fast in FP3 and seemed the favorite, but conditions have changed slightly so the game will be wide open.
11:10 - Beautiful performance by Morbidelli, who will now be able to play a good qualifying in conditions he can obviously handle well with the Pramac Ducati.
11:08 - Quartararo tries to explain the difficulties of this round, tomorrow Fabio will start 23rd on the grid....a real disaster for Yamaha, with Rins instead starting 25th and last on the grid.
11:06 - Zarco loses too much in the third sector and closes without improving his reference. The standings remain unchanged, Morbidelli and Binder move on to Q2.
11:05 - Binder crosses the line and improves but remains second. Checkered flag on the session, Zarco red helmet in the second sector and keeps the game open.
11:05 - Binder insists and scores a red helmet in the second sector, Zarco closes his attempt with the third fastest time, by far the best Honda rider!
11:03 - Binder tries to respond to Morbidelli but he just moves up to second place. Now Morbidelli and Binder are the qualifiers, but Zarco scores a red helmet in the second sector. It's not over!
11:02 - Oliveira puts himself ahead of everyone, Miller scores the 3rd time but a very fast Morbidelli is coming up and he climbs to the top! Franco in Q2 when there are 3 minutes left
11:01 - It should be noted that there are 9 riders within a second in a very complex session. Oliveira now scores a red helmet, as does Morbidelli, who scores two in the first two sectors.
11:00 - Pedrosa manages to get into Q2 with the second time now, then the two Aprilias from Trackhouse. Badly the Yamaha's, with Quartararo 11th and Rins 13th. Morbidelli is jumping again to try to regain passage to Q2.
10:58 - Red helmets from Dani Pedrosa, who is launching an assault on the top spot.
10:57 - Zarco fails to improve while Oliveira does, another wet specialist moving up to third. The Aprilia trackhouses very competitive at this juncture.
10:56 - Third time for Miller relegating Morbidelli to 4th place and out of Q2 of course. Zarco is lapping again and improving.
10:55 - Both Binder and Morbidelli improve and remain at the top of the leaderboard. Zarco author of the third time, then Pedrosa and Augusto Ferndez. But Raul Fernandez comes in and takes the second time!
10:54 - Lots of red helmets, obviously the riders are taking measures to the available grip and the times will drop quite a bit already with the second pass over the finish line.
10:53 - The first references from the track are coming in, with Binder and Morbidelli ahead of everyone and in Q2 right now.
10:52 - Right now it's not raining in Jerez, the track seems to be gradually drying out. The riders are jumping in for the first time attack.
10:51 - Green light, Q1 kicks off and Fabio Quartararo enters the track right away.
10:49 - Miller is a wet specialist, so he will undoubtedly be one of the favorites to pass the turn.
10:47 - Q1 will kick off shortly and with these conditions, the riders who will have to deal with it then qualifying for Q2 will have a big advantage knowing the grip conditions present better. This is the list of drivers who will soon be competing for this Q1.
10:45 a.m. - Good morning and welcome to our LIVE coverage of MotoGP qualifying at Jerez. As expected, rain affected the third free practice session, with Marc Marquez setting the fastest time in these conditions.
Friday opened the dances in Jerez for the fourth round of the 2024 world championship, with Pecco Bagnaia ending the day with a new Andalusian track record. A limit, however, that could fall today, again in the hope that the weather doesn't play any nasty tricks. Pecco was perfect in his time attack and got the better of a pair of Spaniards definitely fierce in Jerez, namely Maverick Vinales and Marc Marquez.
The Aprilia rider is having a golden moment riding an RS-GP that he really seems to have totally in hand and was incisive in both the first and second sessions. Marquez has also taken even better measures of Gresini's Ducati, perhaps also thanks to the new brake lever that seems to help him on the braking, an area in which Marc had not yet felt perfectly comfortable. Today they will undoubtedly both be uncomfortable clients in the quest for pole.
Another possible outsider in qualifying will be Marco Bezzecchi, who has finally started to grind well with VR46's GP23 and was very effective yesterday also taking advantage of Bagnaia's slipstream in his best time attack attempt. Q1 will be quite eventful, as the batch of riders who will play for the passage to the round will also include Brad Binder and Dani Pedrosa, two riders expected to be in quite different positions on the grid than what we saw yesterday.
