MotoGP: Iannone: "As for the Suzuki, I am still lacking consistency"

Andrea Iannone is also in the positions that count on this first day at Phillip Island. In the final phases, the rider from Vasto gave the extra kick needed to climb up in the rankings and take third place between Rossi and Viñales’ Yamahas.

“It was a very complicated morning. After the break, we changed the setup and my confidence increased. I think that for tomorrow it will be important to improve our pace, as well as the flying lap. The team is well aware of which direction we need to go. Unfortunately, when you change tracks, being fast straight away is not always a given.”

What work did you do today?

“We tried to adapt the Suzuki more and more to my style. At the moment, the tyres are not a top priority. We did not even use new ones. Unfortunately, I am still lacking a bit of consistency.

What changed in the afternoon?

“I think that there was some significant growth. We were able to improve the things that were our priorities. Obviously this step forward is not enough, because we still need to take another step.”

What feedback did you get from the tyres?

“The bike proved to be competitive - very fast. I must say that it pleasantly surprised me, because with the used tyre I was able to lap well, whereas with the new one I lowered the time.”

Will you try the new fairing tomorrow?

“To be honest, it is not a priority at the moment. We are focusing on other areas and then we’ll decide what to do.”

What is the most encouraging aspect of the Suzuki?

"The bike has a great frame."

If Iannone is just behind the leader, the rider trying to catch up is Alex Rins. The Spaniard filed the day away with the nineteenth best time almost two second behind Marquez’s Honda. No cutting corners allowed though, because the rookie is in no rush.

“This is a very demanding track, but at the same time I must admit that I like it. I think I was pretty fast, although I need time to get to know the bike better.”

Is it more complicated getting to know the Suzuki or this track?

“More than the bike, I am getting to know the track, particularly the fast corners, which are the biggest obstacle. Today we also tested the new suspension and we had a positive reaction because of it. I am a bit far from Iannone, but I am in line with my rate of growth.”
