MotoGP, Rins says “My hardest win came by maintaining my calm"

"I'd never been in the lead for so many laps, it's easy to make a mistake when you are leading. I could have won before, but I made mistakes."

MotoGP: Rins says “My hardest win came by maintaining my calm

For Suzuki it was a Sunday worth framing: with Alex Rins it won its first race of the year, with Joan Mir it is at the top of the World Championship standings, something that hasn't happened since 2000, the time of the 500s and Kenny Roberts Junior. Two riders on the podium and a revenant Rins, after a start to the season compromised by a shoulder injury in the first race at Jerez and by too many mistakes on his part.

At Aragon, a circuit that reminds him of his childhood (“as a child I used to go on holiday nearby” he recalled), Alex finally showed his full potential and did it in a new way for him.

“Yesterday, after qualifying, I only had one interview. I thought: wait for tomorrow - Rins joked - I had the feeling I could do a good race but, I admit, I didn’t think I could win. Because I was starting from 10th position and I knew it would be difficult to make up positions ”.

Instead everything went in the right way, from the moment the traffic lights went out.

“I made an incredible start – he began his story - When I got behind Vinales I realized I was faster, but I thought he was managing the tyres. Then I overtook him and began to do my race. And it was very long".

And from then on it started to become difficult…

“I had never won like this, staying in the lead, the last two wins I was fighting with Marquez and Valentino - he explained - IThis one was a bit more difficult, because when you are it's easy to make a mistake when you are leading. I tried to maintain my calm, even though I saw that Mir and Marquez were fast. I was able to manage the tyres well ”.

Calm seems to be the key word for Rins, because that's what he's been missing this season…

“I think I had the potential and the bike to do this, I could have done it in other races, but then I made mistakes - he admitted – A lot of people told me to stay calm, especially after crashing in Austria and Le Mans. I did it and I won, this is a very important success, but the best ever, for me, remains the one at Silverstone against Marc. "

Davide Brivio and Suzuki had the right idea when they confirmed Alex and Mir for another two years, even before the season began…

"I want to congratulate Joan - said Alex - This year he is very consistent and it is positive for the title. For me, however, it seems that I’m on a rollercoaster, but for me Mir is a stimulus. When I think I am at my best and he reaches my level, then he pushes me to try even more to overtake him”.
