MotoGP, Bagnaia: "I'll try to stop the Yamahas but they are half a second faster"

"It will be very difficult to stay with them the whole race. I didn't expect to struggle so much in Assen, going from Q1 helped me."

MotoGP: Bagnaia:

Every cloud has a silver lining, as they say and Bagnaia is able to confirm after today’s run. After being excluded from Q2, it seemed that Pecco was destined for another unhappy qualifying, but instead tomorrow he will start from the front row, alongside the Yamahas of Vinales and Quartararo, who have had the run of the mill in Assen these days.

“All in all I was lucky to be in Q1, because in that session I found something that helped me in Q2,” commented the Ducati rider. From here, however, to think of being able to fight for the victory tomorrow, it’s still a long way.

“I didn't expect to struggle so much this weekend - he confessed - The Desmosedici is difficult to handle in the fast corners because it moves a lot. After yesterday, this morning I did a reset and started trying to do something different that allowed me to improve. In FP4 my pace was not bad, but still 5 or 6 tenths slower than that of the Yamahas. I have to take another step forward and I know my team is already at work ”.

Bagnaia is always proving to be among the best, but he never seems to find the perfect weekend.

“Every time something is missing - he admitted - At Sachsenring I had the pace to win or get on the podium, but I started from 10th position and the tire didn't work well in the early laps, sometimes it happens. At Mugello I made a mistake, while at Portimao the yellow flag in qualifying took away my chance to fight for the victory. This time the story is different again”.

Because the Yamahas seem unbeatable…

“I will try to stop them in the first few laps, but it will be difficult to stay with them for the whole race - confirmed Pecco - I can overtake them at the end of the straight, but here in Assen they will have many chances to pass, it is not easy to keep up with them. I just have to make the best possible start and not allow them to take advantage of the extra grip of the new tires. Maybe then I would have a small chance at the end of the race, but even doing so their pace remains incredible ”.
