Pecco Bagnaia’s morale is certainly not the best at the moment, also because his early season ambitions were quite different. The Ducati man is therefore looking to turn his season around at Portimao, the first European round of the World Championship after the four appointments outside the Old Continent.
The goal is therefore to turn the page and start again.
“Last year I won here in Portimao - he began - this is a track that I really like and we will see if we can do a good job. With the work that we have done in the last few races, we know we can be a little further ahead. "
In his declarations, Bagnaia is trying to keep his feet firmly anchored to the ground.
“One step at a time we are managing to understand how to be more competitive. It wasn't an easy start, as last year we had more points and were stronger. We know it is a long job, considering that the GP21 already has two years behind it and at the moment it is still better, but we are getting there ”.
However, Bagnaia has no intention of throwing in the towel.
“If we want to think about the Championship, we need to start achieving some good results. I no longer want to do like the first races, where I got nervous if I was behind. At Austin Miller was good at getting on the podium and we have to do well from here on. In America I was hoping to be ahead, but we managed to make a top five in conditions that were not easy ”.
Meanwhile, at Portimao the unknown weather holds centre stage with the possibility of rain keeping everyone in check.
“The weather will be the same for everyone and we will adapt like the other riders. Apart from Indonesia I have usually always been fast in the wet. I think we have a good base set-up, the important thing is that it works "
Bagnaia then spoke again about the previous weekend in Texas.
“Austin helped us understand a lot of things about me and the bike. It is clear that we are missing something when braking and entering corners, especially when I let go of the brakes. However, this did not happen in Argentina, where those were my strong points just like last year. In America I struggled especially in the race, since in free practice the sensations were different than on Sunday”.
The past is behind him, because now only the present counts.
"I think this race could be useful to understand our level, also because the track conditions are the same as last year".
