The world championship could arrive in Central America, in one of the best-known tourist locations. Negotiations have already begun, but for the moment the only thing that is missing is … the circuit

MotoGP: Mexico and MotoGP: Cancun a candidate to host a Grand Prix

White sandy beaches and the Caribbean sea is what comes to mind when thinking of Cancun, the famous tourist resort on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. But MotoGP could also be added to the picture soon. There has been talk of the world championship coming to Central America for some time and there were rumours in the past of the possibility of using the Mexico City track where Formula 1 races, which however is too dangerous for motorbikes.

The new scenario leads to Cancun, with the organizers who have been talking to Dorna for some time to sound out the possibilities of such a project. A circuit already exists in the Mexican city, it has the high-sounding name of Autodromo Internazionale di Cancun, but in truth the track, built in 1991, does not have the size to host MotoGP, with a length that is just over a kilometre and a half.

Cancun, in 2005, had cherished the dream of a Formula 1 GP, entrusting Hermann Tilke with the project of a new track, the Mantarraya Autodrome, which however remained only on paper. In 2021, on the other hand, the construction of the Autodrome of the Riviera Maya was announced, an imposing project (with a track of 9 km in length): its construction should have begun in February 2022 and finished in 2025, but we have not found any information on the status of the work or even if it has started.

Now MotoGP is knocking on Mexico's doors (or vice versa) and it could be the right time. Even if it will take time.
