MotoGP, Quartararo: “I expected the fall, Bagnaia and Martin don’t interest me”

“It’s not every day that we start off that way. In 2024, Yamaha is changing its behavior, but I don’t expect to fight for the title.”

MotoGP: Quartararo: “I expected the fall, Bagnaia and Martin don’t interest me”

Fabio Quartararo’s Sprint Race on Saturday ended in the gravel, but the French rider sees the glass as half full. Despite not accessing the Q2, the vice world champion was the protagonist of a super start that, in a few rounds, took him to the top five.

Just as he was battling it out with Bagnaia, he compromised his race, causing him to raise the white flag.

“Besides the fall, I’m fine,” he said. “I enjoyed this sprint more than any other during the season. In fact, I had the pace to stay in the five or do even better. The problem was in qualifying, and it has been for a long time, as well as in acceleration. But I managed to start well, yet, what I did today at the start can’t happen every day. Unfortunately during the year, we blamed the acceleration, but today I was able to fight back.”

How do you explain the fall?
“I was at the limit, and sprints are always like that. In some ways, I almost expected it. But I’m happy, because from fifteenth to sixth in a lap has never happened. In the race, I felt I was faster than Pecco, but it was very difficult to be able to make a clean pass. Now we have to think about Sunday, where I have nothing to lose. No one can say that I didn’t fight today, since Bagnaia was in front of me and Bezzecchi was behind.”

What will the epilogue be of the Martin-Bagnaia challenge?
“I don’t care about the world championship fight, and I don'’ care about Pecco or Jorge. I just want to do my best and get the most out of our Yamaha. I did it in Qatar when Martin had to attack.”

What do you expect from Yamaha in 2024, given the imminence of the tests?
"Their behavior is already changing, but I don’t know how long it’ll take. To tell the truth, I don’t even expect to play for the title next year. In fact, I have to be objective in this regard, aware of our current moment. However, we can be closer to the top riders.”
