As soon as he got on a MotoGP, Pedro Acosta scared the competition. Although everyone knew he was talented, probably few imagined he’d be so competitive from the moment he moved into the premier class.
On the first day of Shakedowns – a taste of the actual winter tests scheduled for next week – Pedro was second behind KTM's tester, Pedrosa, on the Sepang circuit. He then placed 3rd on Friday, but ended the three test days ahead of the group, with a time of 1’58”189.
Despite the inclement weather on Saturday afternoon, which didn’t allow others to improve, and led him to make slight mistakes (like his fall during the last morning), the Spanish rider proved that he already knoew how to handle the RC16. Definitely a problem for everyone.
“I mostly worked on the position, understanding the tires, and the set-up. Overall, I’m happy,” he stated. “I managed to do several fast laps, but what matters most is to have kept a good race pace in dry conditions. I was also able to test myself for a while when wet, which is always positive. Today, I also tried to stay in Dani’s slipstream, but it wasn’t easy at all. Next week, I’ll try to do it with other riders to understand something more.”
The Moto 2 champion’s satisfaction was also shared by GasGas team manager Nicolas Goyon. “We’re happy with the outcome of this first test,” he confided. “Pedro was able to express himself well in normal conditions, and he also got the opportunity to grind a few kilometers in the rain. No major changes were made to the bike. We just tried to provide him with the best set-up for his needs and, in the end, he performed very well. Even if we're just getting started, we started off on the right foot.”
