MotoGP, Tyre pressures: Michelin lowers the minimum value for the front for 2024

“We decided to reduce the pressure value from 1.88 to 1.80 bar to give more margin to technicians and riders, asking them to respect it for 60% of the race” explains manager Piero Taramasso

MotoGP: Tyre pressures: Michelin lowers the minimum value for the front for 2024

While the sanction to be applied to those who break the minimum tyre pressure limits in 2024 is still being discussed, when a penalty is triggered for the first infringement, Michelin has already decided to intervene on the values to be respected this season, revising the threshold minimum for the front.

Starting from these final days of testing on the Lusail track (HERE the live broadcast of Day 1), and for the rest of the championship, the sole supplier of MotoGP tyres has decided to reduce the minimum value to be respected by 0.08 bar at the front. So as to meet the needs of teams and riders, who had repeatedly complained last year about an increase in pressure and temperature of the front tyre, staying in the draft of their opponents for a long time.

“This winter we reanalysed all the data from last year and redid all the severity tests with circuit-by-circuit simulations. After this process we decided to reduce the pressure value from 1.88 to 1.80 bar. This will give a little more margin to the technicians and riders, who will be able to stay between 1.8 and 2.1 bar, having a good range to keep the front pressures under control", explained Michelin’s racing manager, Piero Taramasso, in an interview granted to our colleagues at Motorsport.com.

To keep all the parameters safe, Michelin's decision will also affect the percentage of the race to be run above the minimum established threshold, to avoid running into post-race sanctions.

“In exchange we asked to respect the pressure for 60% of the distance of the Sunday race and not for 50% like last year, because we take a bit more risk - said Taramasso - The news was welcomed well by the organizers, the teams and the riders. It will be like this starting from the Qatar test and throughout the season."
