MotoGP: Zaffelli: the Sepang issues? I highlighted them right away

Over the last days Jarno Zaffelli's ears must have been burning, as the frustration of team managers and riders regarding the Sepang track surface was palpable in the paddock. The asphalt takes too long to dry out and, if it rains, hours and hours of important testing are lost.

The boss of Dromo, the company responsible for the work, has been on site at Sepang this week: “I voluntarily decided to offer my support, despite no longer being involved in the work. If they want to listen to me, I'm available” he explains.

The track appears to be a disaster, what's  going on?
There were problems with its laying. I'll give you an example: consider a cake made with rice and chocolate - in some places the chocolate is missing and there's only rice, and it's there that the water stagnates, blocked by the adjoining layers”.

Didn't you realise this when carrying out the work?
Sure, right away, and I told the track managers what was happening. But we didn't contract the work out, the circuit did, and so I had not power to stop the work”.

Nothing more?
Perhaps, in looking for a particularly resistant surface, we exaggerated. In the sense that in certain place there is still a little bitumen above the aggregate and this, with water, behaves as if it were rubber”.

In June work will begin to improve the situation.
They will carry out sealing, which is what we've been suggesting for months.

Will that solve the problem?
It should, there's no need to resurface the track, except for turn 9 perhaps. I think that point needs to be completely redone.  I pointed out all these problems each day during the work, I'm also collaborating with Capirossi and Uncini to improve the situation as quickly as possible”.
