MotoGP: Sealed leathers, smaller fuel tanks and higher spoons: changes for 2023

The Grand Prix Commission, which met in Valencia, did not only deal with the sporting regulations (HERE) but also with the technical ones. From next year there will be some new features for MotoGP, also to adapt the bikes to the Sprint Race. Even the riders’ suits will have to respect more stringent constraints to improve safety. Below the changes for 2023 in detail.

Fuel tank capacity of the MotoGP class - Sprint Races

The maximum tank capacity for sprint races has been confirmed at 12 litres. Teams may choose to use a purpose-built tank with this capacity or an alternative method of reducing the normal tank capacity. Other fuel tank regulations will be in line with those for standard racing, e.g. ambient fuel temperature, scrutineering method, etc.

Swingarm spoon ground clearance - MotoGP class

Following an incident that occurred during the San Marino GP in 2022, in which the swingarm spoon of a motorcycle broke as a result of contact with a kerb, it was decided to increase the minimum ground clearance allowed by 15 mm, taking it to 35 mm.

Brake disc carriers - All classes

After consultation with the suppliers, the following regulation was confirmed: Composite construction of brake disc carriers (including reinforced carbon fibre, reinforced glass fibre and the like) are not allowed. The only materials allowed are magnesium alloys and aluminium alloys.

Fuel Tanks - All Classes

The material allowed for the construction of the fuel tanks have been confirmed. The main structure of the tank must be completely made of steel or aluminium. However, the use of other materials, including carbon fibre, aramid fibre and glass fibre, is allowed as an add-on, if necessary, to add extra stiffness and protection, or for other purposes.

Rider equipment - Leathers

Following incidents in which the riders’ leathers became unzipped (the case of Quartararo in Aragon is emblematic), a new fastening system has been agreed with the manufacturers. The use of leathers with this closure system is henceforth mandatory.
