Moto2: Pons’ farewell to World Championship: “It’s time to step aside”

After 42 years, 5 World Championship riders titles, 3 teams, 71 victories, and over 230 podiums, Sito Pons’s team will be leaving the Moto2 World Championship at the end of this season.

During these years in the Moto2, the team has been one of the leaders of the Championship, and some of the best riders who compete in the MotoGP have been on it: Pol and Aleix Espargaró, Fabio Quartararo, Maverick Viñales, Alex Rins, and Augusto Fernández. But the history of the Pons Racing team goes much further back in time, starting with the two world World Championship titles won by Sito Pons himself in 1988 and 1989. In 1992, he entered the 500 alongside Álex Crivillé, who ended up achieving the first victory by a Spanish rider in this category. Pons managed to make his satellite team the last to win the teams title, beating the official teams. Its riders include those from Spain:  Álex Crivillé, Alberto Puig, Carlos Checa, as well as riders Alex Barros, Loris Capirossi, Max Biaggi, Troy Bayliss, and Tohru Ukawa.

In the intermediate category, Pons Racing was the last team to achieve a victory in the 250 class with Héctor Barberá and, in 2013, it achieved success by winning the Moto2 title with Pol Espargaró, adding two more team World Championship titles to their list, in addition to two MotoE titles with Jordi Torres, in 2020 and 2021.

With over 230 podiums and 71 victories on its track record, Pons Racing has decided to step aside.

Sometimes you have to make certain decisions, and I think the time has come to end this very successful period we have experienced with the team,” Sito Pons explained. “From my time as a rider, it’s been forty-two years in the championship and, when we started this  project, we knew we wanted to be a leading team and, season after season, we’ve always been fighting among the best. Our time in the MotoGP has been very successful, as have the years in the Moto2. I am proud to have contributed to the development of the sporting careers of all these riders and that some of them are still protagonists in the MotoGP today. The commitment of PONS Racing has always been to support the Spanish riders and serve as a launching pad for them in the MotoGP, and we have done so, providing them with the best tools to achieve the best results and training them both professionally and personally. I can’t forget all the sponsors who have been part of the team. We have always felt supported and, thanks to them ,we have been able to carry out all these projects. My most sincere thanks. And also to all the riders, mechanics, and team staff who have put their trust in PONS Racing. People are what make the team work, and we have been lucky to have the best. I also want to thank everyone, MotoGP, Dorna, and IRTA, for their constant help and support. It is now time to step aside and face the future with optimism. We will always see each other on the circuits.
