The immediate future of the Argentine GP could be in serious danger. The cuts imposed by the newly elected president, Javier Milei, are so drastic as to make it impossible to actually set up the race weekend scheduled for early April on the Termas de Rio Hondo track.
The third appointment of the calendar, which will start on March 10th in Qatar, could be cancelled for reasons related to the severe economic crisis that has long plagued the country. As soon as the 53-year-old president was elected, he immediately implemented a policy aimed at reducing expenses, starting from reducing the number of Ministries, which went from 18 to 9.
From this point of view, it seems quite unlikely that he’ll allow for the funds required for the competition, which normally receives state money, in addition to that of the provincial council of Santiago del Estero and private promoters.
What strengthens this hypothesis is the cancellation of the opening round of the Motocross World Championship announced on January 19th, which was scheduled for March 9th and 10th on the Neuquén track. But it seems like something has changed.
Obviously, this is feasible due to the lower costs for the sport on dirt roads compared to the World Championship. But the teams are groping in the dark, and no official news has been received from IRTA. The shared feeling is that there will actually be no GP. If so, the premier class will have a three-week stopover between Portugal and Texas, staged on March 24th and April 14th, respectively.
Although the Hungarian Balaton Park track was designated as a reserve at the end of September 2023, it doesn’t seem viable as a replacement, due to the lack of time. According to Motorsport.com, the Kazakhstan GP, scheduled for mid-June and already cancelled last season, could also suffer the same fate.
