Livio Suppo: “My idea for Moto2 and Moto3 is the same bikes for everyone"

The Italian manager the new consultant for Italtrans: “Continuing the chase for performance makes no sense, it is better to halve the costs, even with fewer races. Marquez never raced in 250 yet we know his talent"

Moto2: Livio Suppo: “My idea for Moto2 and Moto3 is the same bikes for everyone

The season is upon us and a new challenge awaits Livio Suppo. After seeing him in Suzuki in the role of team manager, Italtrans has decided to focus on the Italian’s experience as Racing Consultant. Livio will therefore make his skills available to the structure led by Laura Bertlussi as an external consultant.

We spoke with him during the presentation of the team which was held on Saturday in the team's Orobic headquarters. Livio's words are clear and transparent, analysing the current situation in Moto2 and not only that. “First of all, I am particularly grateful to Italtrans for this opportunity – he said – We are talking about a solid reality, which certainly represents a benchmark within the category, but above all with a great passion for the world of motors. They offered me this opportunity and I decided to accept it."

Livio, what are your thoughts on this much-discussed Moto2?

“I am of the opinion that Moto2 and Moto3 need changes. First of all, we need to revise the decision to eliminate the Warm Up, because there are several new entries and this is an aspect that I don't agree with. Furthermore, there are far too many races on the calendar, considering that half are outside Europe. Logistics costs therefore become very demanding to bear, especially for a small team."

How should we intervene?

“I am of the opinion that a de facto single-bike is necessary. If it were me deciding,  I would move in that direction. There is no point in continuing with the search for performance, because in my opinion it makes more sense to have bikes two seconds slower but with half the costs. Doing so allows us to put all the riders in a better position for talent to emerge while now we only have a comparison between Italians and Spaniards. I would like to see a category like in 2011 again, when Bradl won. I would then like to add one more thing."

If I remember correctly you started from the 250.

"Exactly. Many considered the 250 as a fundamental category in the context of MotoGP. To be honest, I don't agree, given that a rider like Marc Marquez didn't move up from 250, but he became a champion. Returning to current events, in my opinion we need to try to revise the current dynamics to relaunch the championship."

One of the new features of next season will be the arrival of Pirelli.

“I think the arrival of a new manufacturer is good for the Championship. I am of the opinion that with Pirelli some values will change, furthermore the tyres will offer a wider window to the riders. We already had some indications during the first tests carried out last season and now all that remains is to prepare for the new one."

Also this season you will be at Foggia's side. What should we expect from him?

“This is Dennis's second year in Moto2 and we obviously expect a step forward. Despite Acosta's move to MotoGP, the category is certainly of a high level because the gaps are particularly small. There are riders like Dixon, Arbolino, Aldeguer, Canet and as a result it’s a tough challenge. With Foggia we must first confirm ourselves in the top ten and then get closer to the top five. We will try to adopt a scientific approach without leaving anything to chance."
