MotoGP, Pernat: "Yamaha, what a beating! And maybe not just a one-off"

Gibernau has helped Pedrosa rediscover his love for racing, having the support of a rider has become a need rather than a trend

MotoGP: Pernat: "Yamaha, what a beating! And maybe not just a one-off"

It was a Spanish GP to frame for Honda, doing the double with Pedrosa and Marquez, but also for Jorge Lorenzo, scoring his first podium with the Ducati. Yamaha sank, for them it was a Sunday that fell well below expectations, beaten even by rookie Zarco. His was the first M1 to cross the line.

This is what went on during race four of the season according to the ever watchful Carlo Pernat.

Where shall we start Carlo?

“I think it's now the fashion to have the support of a rider, something that never happened in the past. Rossi started it with Cadalora, who knows the techniques but also the psychology, then there's Pirro with Lorenzo. The most striking example is definitely Gibernau with Pedrosa, as Sete has meant that Dani is once again happy to race. Before, with Alberto Puig, he was nervous, skittish, he wasn't enjoying himself. I have to say that having the support of a rider has become a need rather than a trend”.

Can we say that Honda wiped the floor at Jerez?

“It was domination, with both Pedrosa and Marquez. Marc raced intelligently, showing that he knows when to settle and take important championship points”.

A black Sunday for Yamaha.

“They took a beating, no-one could have imagined that at Jerez, especially if we consider Zarco's performance. It's a tyre problem for sure, but it's the responsibility of the engineers, especially after two years of experience with Michelin. In my opinion, what happened yesterday will happen again if the bike cannot be adapted to the tyres”.

Lorenzo third. Few would have bet on that.

“It's a resurrection for Ducati, I think they're at a technical turning point. Jorge and Andrea's complaints, about making the engine work too hard, have been considered by the team. Lorenzo has made a fundamental contribution, he did well, no-one would have imagined a podium in Spain”.

For Suzuki another GP to forget.

“I think it's a crisis with Iannone, resulting from electronics that are still too new, as underlined by Espargarò and Vinales in the past. Right now, he must make the best of it”.

And Zarco?

“N-one knew anything about him, myself included. He's never really been considered by anyone, despite his two titles, perhaps to his reserved nature. Davide Brivio is kicking himself, as Johann was under contract with him, but he went for Rins instead. Poncharal will be pleased, not because he chose him, but because he ended up with him anyway, as he was down a rider.”.
