SBK: Rea: "What a struggle braking! But I'm faster than in 2016"

The morning at Imola had deceived Johnny Rea. Indeed, because in the afternoon, the Northern Irishman had to reckon with an uncontainable Chaz Davies. The Welshman took the lead from him, beating him by almost half a second. It is a very clear signal.

How would you rate these two free practice sessions?

“I am faster than last year and that is definitely a step forward. Today Chaz proved to be really strong with a good pace. Obviously we have a few steps to take before tomorrow. FP3 will be crucial.”

What is the Kawasaki lacking?

“In the slower sections, especially in the chicanes, I am struggling too much in braking, but we have a few ideas for the frame with the goal of being more competitive in Superpole and Race 1. We will need to focus on the front.”

Is that all?

“We need to work on direction changes. We still need more acceleration.”

What were your sensations with the tyres?

“In the afternoon I used the soft tyre for a few laps and I had some good feedback.”

Does the script follow last year’s in some ways?

“That’s true. Last year I was behind on Friday and then in the race the gap behind Chaz was reduced. I am confident, but we need to find a solution quickly.”

Is winning at Imola the priority or can you settle?

“Winning is never a priority. It will be fundamental to avoid mistakes and at the same time to demonstrate that we are consistent. On this last aspect I am rather confident. A podium would not be bad.”
