Zanardi still in a coma: "conditions less serious than Schumacher's"

Alex Zanardi is still being kept in a medically induced coma and the slow recovery that began after neurosurgery is continuing, thus following the normal and stable clinical course, as confirmed by the latest medical bulletin. Doctors are evaluating whether it will be possible in the next few days to gradually suspend the therapy that is keeping him sedated to verify his neurological picture. They explained that the sportsman’s clinical condition must be maintained stabile before deciding whether to proceed with this step. Obviously, he still remains in a critical condition.

"There is a very strong emotional impact, all our doctors feel this pressure - said the medical director of Siena’s Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Roberto Gusinu on the occasion of the medical bulletin on the condition of Alex Zanardi - We are doing our best to maintain our equilibrium".

In recent days it has emerged that the conditions of the serious facial trauma are less serious than those suffered by Michael Schumacher.

A declaration to this effect was made by Giuseppe Oliveri, director of the Neurosurgical division that urgently operated on Zanardi.

"Axonal damage would seem to have been averted. Widespread axonal damage is very extensive damage to the whole cerebral cortex, from which one hardly ever returns to normal cognitive and motorial functions".
